8 cosmetic ingredients to avoid in skincare may be worth considering before making future purchases :
-
Formaldehyde
In cosmetic products and especially nail care products, it acts as a preservative. There are studies showing that Formaldehyde is bad for your health. Studies prove that it can cause asthma or irritation. It is banned in aerosol cosmetics in Canada.
Formaldehyde may also appear as an impurity in the composition of other ingredients, such as quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3 diol (Bronopol), etc.1 -
Phtalates
This family of substances is part of the same family as DBP, DEHP and DEP which plasticize. They are not present in the list of cosmetic ingredients, as it is regularly present in trace amounts. Phthalates help odors stick to the skin.
This ingredient has negative effects on the body, such as endocrine imbalance.
-
Parabens
Parabens, methylparabens, isobutylparabens, proplyparabens, and others are all part of the parabens family and are used as preservatives in cosmetics. Cosmetic products use them in their ingredients to prevent the development of bacteria or fungus.
-
Polyethylene glycol (PEG)
This ingredient is usually found in cleansers to remove oil and grease. Polyethylene glycol is also found in cosmetic products to help replenish the moisture barrier.
PEGs have a negative environmental impact, as they are not biodegradable and their manufacturing process is highly polluting, as well as being dangerous due to the risk of explosion. In fact, they are synthetic substances made from ethylene oxide, a highly reactive gas. -
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
SLES is used to make products foam. It is also present for its cleaning properties. Sodium Laureth Sulfate may have adverse effects that are present in reaction to its contamination with 1,4-dioxane, a controversial substance if not regulated.
