Switching to an aluminum-free deodorant
HOWEVER, let's be honest: if this is your very first aluminum-free deodorant, you may be going through a bit of an underarm transition or "detox" period. It sounds serious, but it's perfectly normal and will pass quickly! And it's SO worth it! Basically, you may sweat more for a few days while your body eliminates a toxin build-up. But it is also very possible that you will not notice any change!
To help you through this adjustment, here are some helpful tips:
- Maintain good hygiene. Clean your underarms at the end of the day with a mild natural soap and warm water. Also, make sure to dry them well after showering, as excess moisture can increase odor.
- Focus on exfoliation. The best way to exfoliate your underarms is to scrub them with a washcloth or use a gentle natural exfoliant (without plastic microbeads) 2-3 times a week. Exfoliation also helps reduce odor by removing dead skin cells.
- Try vinegar. Put a small amount of apple cider vinegar (not white vinegar, unless you want to smell like French fries) on a (preferably reusable) cotton pad and dab it on your underarms to reduce their pH and inhibit odor-causing bacteria. Let them air dry, then apply your deodorant.
- Wear natural fibers. Choosing natural fibers over synthetic fabrics can make a HUGE difference in the way your sweat smells! Synthetic blends absorb sweat poorly and promote the growth of odor-causing bacteria. Choose cotton, linen or bamboo clothing instead.
- Drink water. Stay well hydrated during the transition period. It's important to drink plenty of water, especially since you may sweat more during the first few weeks.
- Cultivate your patience. As the saying goes, good things come to those who wait! You'll see that once you're past this little detox period, you'll NEVER want to go back!
