March 23, 2023How to soothe itchy skin

Allergic reactions, insect bites, eczema: These are just some of the many factors that can cause itchy skin! The reasons why your skin can become itchy, however, are oftentimes much more subtle than those visible blotches that cover your body after a camping trip. If your itching is the result of having sensitive or dry skin, this is for you.

Learn more about the products that remedy the problem, which ingredients to use, and the substances of concern that should be avoided according to the EWG… All going towards losing that annoying discomfort and regaining healthy, glowing skin.

Products made just for you

Between 60%-70% of women, and 50%-60% of men, say they have sensitive skin1. So you’re not alone! And the good news is that some gentle products have been specially designed to help you give your fragile skin the TLC it deserves. Here are some tips to find those best suited for you:

1. Look for nourishing and soothing treatments

Dry, itchy skin can be due to a deficiency in essential fats, the end result being an immediate need for comfort. We suggest looking for skincare that contains a blend of soothing, nutrient-rich and naturally sourced ingredients that compensate for the lack of lipids that cause dryness. (We’ll get to discussing the ingredients a bit later.)

2. No odour, no problem

Dry, itchy skin tends to react negatively to fragrances, so itʼs best to avoid them. But that doesnʼt mean settling for boring products! Relieve the itching – and soothe your mind – by using aroma-free, creamy textures specially designed for sensitive skin.

3. Soothe those delicate areas

Lips, armpits, and the scalp are all in need of pampering, yet unfortunately we tend to neglect these areas. Give them the attention they crave with the proper care.

4. Create a simple and healthy routine

The key to not being overly aggressive with your dry, itchy skin is simplicity – don’t make things complicated. Establish a routine and stick to essentials that do not contain any ingredients of concern as per the Environmental Working Group. And if you’re not sure how to determine if a product is safe, consult the EWGʼs Skin Deep® database. It contains reviews of over 88,000 beauty products and 3,000 brands.

Every ingredient counts

When choosing care for your dry, itchy skin, pay close attention to the list of ingredients: some will become your best allies, while others, not so much.

Preferred ingredients

  • Phytoglycogen
This revolutionary ingredient has recently entered the world of beauty, and it’s simply amazing. Highly moisturizing, phytoglycogen naturally enhances radiance and restores skin comfort. You’ll find it in all Oceanly face care products.

  • Shea butter
Commonly found in body lotions, shea butter is rich in vitamins A, E and F (the vitamins that nourish and soothe dry skin).

  • Argan oil
Due to its high vitamin E and fatty acid content, argan oil is ideal for dry skin and the scalp. Along with preserving hydration, it has softening and protective properties.

  • Oat extract
Oat extract’s reputation is well established, as it is known for both its antioxidant properties and its ability to reduce the redness and relieve dry, itchy skin2. Learn more about this precious ingredient here.

Ingredients to avoid

  • Fragrances
Although pleasing to the senses, aromas can cause allergic reactions or itchiness for people who have sensitive skin. As mentioned earlier, it is recommended to opt for odourless skincare3.

  • Propylene glycol
Part of the alcohol family and frequently used as an emollient or humectant in skin moisturizers, it’s not uncommon for propylene glycol to cause irritation or itchy skin4!

  • Sodium lauryl sulphate
Do you have a cleanser or shower gel that lathers super-easily, but dries out your skin? If that’s the case, it probably contains sodium lauryl sulfate. This surfactant interferes with the natural moisturizing barrier, leaving skin even more dry and damaged5.

  • Alcohol
Found in hair gels and hand sanitizers. Although it has natural origins, alcohol can irritate, burn, and dry sensitive skin, especially when used in body care products6.

Be mindful of your environment

In addition to using skincare designed to soothe dry, itchy skin, make sure that you are in-sync with your environment by following these tips:
